– 휴머노이드 로봇: 축구에서부터 인명구조까지

TEDxNASA, TED2011 컨퍼런스의 감동적인 TED talk 을 통해 많은 사람들에게 알려진 그는 이번 TEDxKAIST 에서 현재 개발중인 로봇 프로젝트에 대해 이야기 할 예정이다.

- 아이들을 스토리텔러로 키우는 방법.

김태우 연사는 KAIST 학부 4학년이던 시절, 미국실리콘 벨리의 벤처 캐피탈에서 근무하면서 여러 젊은 창업가들로부터 영감을 받아 창업에 뛰어들었다. ‘Moglue’라는 회사를 설립했고, 누구나 손쉽게 ‘interactive’한 전자책을 만들 수 있는 프로그램 개발로 국내외의 시선을 끌고 있다.

김태우 연사는 ‘피카소의 말처럼 모든 아이들이 예술가이다’라 말하며, 모든 아이들이 반짝이는 눈으로 이야기를 쏟아내지만 어른이 되면서 그 능력을 잃어버리는 것에 대한 안타까움을 표한다. 이번 TEDxKAIST를 통해, 그는 모든 아이들을 자신의 이야기를 간직한 스토리텔러(Storyteller)로 만들기 위해 필요한 것들에 대한 이야기를 전한다.

- 자신의 행복은 자신의 책임이다.

하울앳더문(HOWL Atthe MOON)을 운영하고 있는 김태림 연사는 자신을 ‘술집 사장’이라고 소개한다. 그러나 사진전을 열기도 하고, Reflect(거울을 통해 보는 세상)라는 이름의 단편 영화를 찍기도 했으며, 지난 10월 KAIST에서 열린 KAMF(KAIST Art & Music Festival)의 디렉터이기도 하다. 최근에는 ‘우리는 왜 서울로 가야만 하는가’ 라는 의문을 던지고, ‘우리가 누릴 수 있는 문화는 특정 지역에 한정적 이여서는 안되며, 그 수준 또한 어디에서든 동등해야 한다’ 라는 생각으로 ‘인조이먼트 하울(ENJOYment HOWL)’이라는 공연 기획사도 설립하였다.

김태림 연사는 자신의 이러한 경험을 바탕으로, 좋아하는 일을 시작하고, 그 일을 하면서 느끼는 어려움과 즐거움에 대한 이야기를 나누고자 한다.

- 풍경 속의 그대

신성욱 연사는 다큐멘터리 작가 겸 PD로, 지난 20여 년간  KBS스페셜, ‘생로병사의 비밀’, KBS특집 ‘2부작 읽기혁명’ 등 약 60여 편의 다큐멘터리가 그의 손에서 탄생했다. 한국방송대상 대상, AIBD어워드  다큐멘터리 부문상 등을 수상하기도 했다. 신성욱 연사는 최근 새로운 분야로도 관심을 넓혀, 지난해 ‘한국의 신문, 방송에 등장하는 우뇌 연구’라는 제목의 논문으로 KAIST 과학저널리즘 대학원 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, ‘뇌가 좋은 아이’라는 책을 저술하였다.

이번 TEDxKAIST에서는 지난 20여 년간 다큐멘터리를 제작하는 과정에서 만난 사람들을 소개한다. 우리는 모두 일상의 장면 속에서 주인공으로 조연으로 혹은 단역으로 살아간다. 결코 홀로 살 수는 없다. 그리고 하찮은 장면이란 없다. 장면 하나하나가 모여 나의 삶을 이룬다.

- 고등학생 해커의 시각으로 세상을 바라보다

겉으로 볼 때에는 그저 평범한 고등학생인 김동선 연사는 해맑게 웃으며 어릴 적 아무것도 모르고 재미로 해킹을 하다가 경찰서를 다녀온 적도 있다고 말한다. 세계 해킹 보안 기술 연구 그룹 ‘WOWHACKER’의 최연소 멤버이며, 세계 해킹 방어대회 SECUINSIDE 2011 문제 출제 및 운영자로도 활동했으며, ARGOS, Layer7 CTF 등의 해킹방어대회에서 1위를 차지하기도 했다. 뿐만 아니라, 금융 기관에서 사용하는 여러 애플리케이션의 보안 기술 개발에도 참여하였다.

이번 TEDxKAIST에서는 직접 해킹 퍼포먼스를 선보일 예정이며, 해킹에 대한 이야기와 경험을 바탕으로 한 일상 생활 속 인터넷 보안 불감증에 대한 메세지를 전한다.

- ‘딴짓’을 내일로 미루지 말자.

오세범 연사는 KAIST 산디과를 졸업하고, 현재 문화기술대학원에서 재학 중이다. 대학 동기들과 만든 ‘사소한 스튜디오’,  1인 프로젝트 ‘딴짓의 세상’을 통해 다양한 활동을 진행하고 있으며 인디밴드 가을방학의 앨범 디자이너이기도 하다.  오세범 연사는 “누구나 영화감독이나 작가가 될 수는 없지만, 누구나 자신만의 영화나 책을 만들어 볼 수는 있다”고 말한다. 누가 시키지도 않았지만 자발적으로 하게 되는 ‘딴짓’이 사실은 자신을 더 잘 표현하는 것일지도 모른다.

디자인, 독립출판, 영상제작 등에 대한 자신의 관심을 행동으로 옮겨 초단편 다큐멘터리를 만들고, 독립 출판으로 자신의 아이슬란드 여행기를 책으로 만들었던 이야기를 통해, 꾸준한 ’딴짓’이 주는 즐거움에 대해 이야기한다.

- ‘Left Brain, Right Brain, Heart’

유상현 연사는 KAIST 산업공학과를 졸업한 후, 전공을 바꾸어 미국 카네기멜론대학에서 Entertainment Technology를 공부하였다. 단편영화, 뮤직비디오, 3D입체영상, 디지털 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하고 있으며, 2012 여수엑스포 ‘엑스포디지털갤러리(EDG)’를 통해 인터렉티브 미디어아트 작품 ‘EDG Twitter’와 ‘Magic Tile’을 선보이기도 했다. 현재 서강대 아트앤테크놀로지학과에서 게임 연출을 가르치고 있으며, 미디어아트그룹  ‘Zero To One’의 감독으로도 활동 중이다.

TEDxKAIST에서는 자신의 경험을 토대로 공학도로서의 좌뇌 활용과 아티스트로서의 우뇌 활용 사이에서 길을 찾고 있는 이야기를 들려주고, 미디어아트 디제잉 퍼포먼스를 보여줄 예정이다.

- Soundspray: 적정기술 + 디자인

이희원 연사는 현재 KAIST 산업디자인학과 ID+IM LAB박사 과정에 재학중인 학생이다. 다수의 디자인 상품을 만들고, 이를 판매하여 저소득층 학생들을 돕고, 나눔을 실천하는 ‘나눔 프로젝트’의 일원으로서 사회 공헌을 실천하고 있다. 2011년부터는 국경을 넘어, 해외에서도 디자인 나눔을 실천하기 위한 “시드 프로젝트(Seed Project)”에 참여 중으로, 아프리카 케냐 현지 방문 조사를 바탕으로, 개발도상국의 소외된 계층을 위한 디자인을 통해 사회 공헌을 시도하고 있다.

이번 TEDxKAIST에서는 자신이 Soundspray라는 적정 기술 제품을 개발하고 제작한 이야기를 통해, 개발도상국을 위한 디자인의 중요성 및 영향력, 그리고 사회적 디자인을 알리고, 더불어 이에 관심 있는 디자이너 그리고 공학자들을 위한 팁을 주고 싶다고 한다.

– 선택하지 않은 길

David Helfman 연사는 미국 노스웨스턴 대학에서 학사를 마치고, EMORY 대학에서 석.박. 과정을 마친 후, 세계적인 생명연구소 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories 에서 십여년간 연구 활동을 했다. 그 후, 마이애미 대학에서 교수로 재직했고, 2009년부터 지금까지 KAIST 생명과학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 이 프로필로 살펴본 David Helfman 연사는 상당한 엘리트 코스를 거쳐온 것으로 보이지만,  자신은 교수를 꿈꿨던 것은 아니라고 한다.

그저 평범한 대학생에 불과했던 자신을 변화시켰던 여러 사건과 사람들, 그리고 경험을 통해 인생에 있어 오직 한가지 길만 존재하는 것은 아님을 깨달았고, 이번 TEDxKAIST에서는 이러한 것들을 통해 가끔은 우회하는 것도 나쁘지만은 않다는 것을 말하고자 한다.

– Humanoid Robots: From Playing Soccer to Saving People’s Lives

Dr. Dennis Hong, a TED alumnus, is an Associate Professor and the Founding Director of RoMeLa (Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory) of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on robot locomotion and manipulation, autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. He is the inventor of a number of novel robots and mechanisms, including the ‘whole skin locomotion’ for mobile robots inspired by how amoeba move, a unique three-legged waking robot STriDER, an air-powered robotic hand RAPHaEL, and the world’s first car that can be driven by the blind. His work has been featured on numerous national and international media. Washington Post magazine called Dr. Hong “the Leonardo da Vinci of robots.

TaeWoo Kim(CEO of Moglue)

– How to Raise Children as Storytellers

As a senior in university, TaeWoo Kim jumped into the pool of start-ups, intrigued by young entrepreneurs when working at a venture capital in the Silicon Valley. He established a company “Moglue” that develops a program that allows the easy creation of interactive electronic books. Such idea has drawn both domestic and international interest. He laments over the fact that when “All children are artists, just as Picasso had stated” and yet lose the ability to speak of their wonderfully sparkling stories as they become adults.

At TEDxKAIST, he talks about the necessities in making all children ‘Storytellers’, to grow up as adults treasuring their stories.

– Your Happiness is Your Responsibility

TaeLim Kim, the manager of “HOWL Atthe MOON”, simply introduces himself as a “Bar Owner”. Despite his humble self-description, he has held several photo exhibitions, shot a short film “Reflect”, and worked as a director of KAMF (KAIST Art & Music Festival) last October. Recently he has established a production agency “ENJOYment HOWL” by posing the question “Why we must go to Seoul” and coming up with the answer that culture should not be limited to a certain region.

TaeLim Kim will share his personal experiences at TEDxKAIST his hardships and the joy of stepping out and realizing his passion.

DongSeon Kim(Hacker)

– Viewing the World with Hacker’s Eyes

DongSun Kim, an innocent and ordinary looking high school student, will speak of his childhood experience of once having gone to the Police Station charged with “hacking various things for fun”. He is currently the youngest member of “WOWHACKER”, which conducts research on the World Hacking Security Technology. He has also worked as an organizer as well as a member of the exam-question-setting committee for the World Hacking Defense Competition SECUINSIDE 2011.  He has won First Place in various hacking defense competitions such as AROS and Layer CTF. In addition, he has participated in the development of security techniques for applications used by several financial institutions (banking agencies).

Here at TEDxKAIST, he will demonstrate computer hacking and talk about security insensitivity in daily lives based on his own stories and experiences

– Lets not Procrastinate Hobbies  

SeBeom Oh is currently a student at the KAIST Graduate School of Cultural Technology, having graduated from KAIST Department of Industrial Design. He is involved in numerous different extracurricular activities such as ‘Petty Studio’ a project started with his university colleagues, a one-person project ‘World of Hobbies, and is also an active album jacket designer of the indie band Autumn Vacation. Se Beom Oh believes that not anyone can become a movie director or an author but anyone can produce their own movie or novel. These voluntarily initiated products of hobbies are a better form a self-expression.

At TEDxKAIST SeBeom Oh will tell us about his story on the joys of transferring his interests in design, independent publication, and movie production into short documentaries and a travel book of Iceland.

– ‘Left Brain, Right Brain, Heart’

Cooper Sanghyun Yoo did not follow the conventional career path of an engineer. Having graduated from KAIST Department of Industrial Engineering he then moved on to studying Entertainment Technology at Carnegie Mellon University. He is active in various fields including short film, music video, 3D images, and digital performance and showcased his media art pieces ‘EDG Twitter’ and ‘Magic Tile’ in the 2012 Yeosu Expo, ‘Expo Digital Gallery’. Currently Cooper Sanghyun Yoo is teaching Game Design in Sogang University’s Department of Art and Technology while acting as a director in the media art group ‘Zero to One’.

At TEDxKAIST he will share his story on finding his path between utilizing the left side of the brain as an engineer and the right side of the brain as an artist and wrap it off with a media art DJ-ing performance.

– Soundspray: Appropriate Technology + Design

Lee HeeWon is a KAIST Industrial Design ID+IM Lab Doctorate candidate student and is a member of the ‘Nanum Project’. ‘Nanum Project’ aims to create design and sell design products to raise funds for the lower income students and contribute to society. At the same time HeeWon Lee is participating in the ‘Seed Project’ that looks to look beyond Korean borders to practice sharing through design especially for the under privileged in Kenya.

At TEDxKAIST HeeWon Lee will share her experience in designing and developing the Soudspray and give designers and engineers tips regarding appropriate technology.

– The Road Not Taken

David Helfman received his B.A. from Northwestern University, M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University and for two decades continued research at the world renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. He was a Professor of the University of Miami and has been a Professor of Biological Sciences here at KAIST since 2009. David Helfman at first glance, is in an elite class of intellectuals. Despite this he never dreamt of becoming a Professor.

At TEDxKAIST David Helfman will share his life changing experiences as an ordinary student, the realization that there is no one right path in life, and that it is perfectly fine to diverge from the current path.
